A Message from Angela Darling Founder and President of Love Your Breasts, Inc.
Welcome to the site of Love Your Breasts, Inc. (LYBI) where your concerns are our concerns. A diagnosis of breast cancer or any other cancer is not a death sentence. Following any such diagnosis with education is the key factor. Knowledge is power. Get the facts and learn all you can about the disease. Obtain a second and third opinion if you need to in order to maintain a comfort zone and comfortable emotional level. Why? Because you deserve it. Therefore, be partners with your selected physician. Breast cancer does not discriminate because men get breast cancer too. In the United States this year, approximately 500 men will die from breast cancer versus over 200,000 women.
The good news is that early detection is the best protection and key to successful treatment and survival. There are over 9 million cancer survivors overall and this is a great acknowledgement to cancer research, treatment and support services.
LYBI provides support services in the Bronx community, so please tell a family member, loved one or a friend or two. Please invite us to your church, health/street fair or for guest speaker presentations for your church, community group, etc. in the Bronx or any other borough. Donations are appreciated to spread our mission or love.
Do not ignore the early warning signs in hopes that their symptoms will disappear. Instead you must immediately contact your physician. Do not make your own diagnosis. Remember 8-9 out of 10 breast lumps are not cancerous. If you perform a breast self examination (BSE) monthly, you will notice the slightest change. The ideal time is to begin in your teens and continue through old age. The best time is 7-10 days after your menstrual period. At this time breasts are less swollen and tender. This is also the best time to have your mammogram done. After menopause or following a hysterectomy perform BSE monthly on the first day of the month or a date every month significant to you. (ex: birthday date, grandchild's birthday date, etc.) Be aware that BSE has played a key role for more than 50% of women who found breast lumps during this practice. Cease the fear. The old adage says, "There's nothing to fear but fear itself." Push negative thoughts out of your mind and out of your life. If you are a negaholic, then work against this thought process beginning NOW!!!
Remain focused and think positive thoughts always. If you are not already doing this then let me advise you to set aside fifteen minutes daily for you and you alone. Remember, you are #1 and you are special! During this quiet moment take deep breaths... inhale... exhale. Listen to your inner spirit which talks to you and guides you. Just take the time to listen. Be blessed. Take charge of your life and enjoy every precious moment.
